Third generation Photoluminescent paint: Re-Light

The Re-Light 2 Pack System consists of:

  • The Re-Light –“ Visual Key” -System, is a new development based on the high performance MSS-strontium aluminate pigments and a new, high tech epoxy binder. The binder system contains no solvents or allergenic components and has very good adhesion to most common building materials. The surface of the product is glossy, without pores and dirt repellent as well as having anti graffiti properties and a non yellowing effect without an extra special top coat.

  • Re-Light “Visual Key” has to be applied on a white surface to get a good effect of the after glowing pigments. Here the RE-Light primers can be used. The Re-Light super epoxy white primer is a solvent free, non-allergenic product with excellent adhesion to most surfaces and a glossy surface. For less critical surfaces and in areas where the normal water based epoxies are allowed to be used, a Re-Light water based white primer can be supplied, which will adhere and cure efficiently even on wet surfaces.


Photoluminescent paints - Test results

The standard delivery program for Re-Light–“ Visual Key” includes 2 after glowing products: The Re-Light EG 75 (high quality grade) and Re-Light EG 55 (medium quality, discount grade for floors), both based on the super hybrid epoxy coatings. (photo luminescent coating, US). The coatings are charged with the ambient light, than store it and discharge it over a certain length of time in darkness. The EG 75 will glow with a strength of 600 millicandela/m2 after 10 minutes when fully charged with 1000 Lux and be visible in a dark room for more than 100 hours if applied in thicker layers (>1 kg/m2).

Our third generation photo luminescent paint EG 75 gives a phosphorescent effect of 75 mcd/m2 after 10 minutes (charged at 21,6 lux). The more affordable EG 55 reaches 55 mcd/m2 after 10 minutes. IMO requires a minimum of 15 mcd/m2 after 10 minutes and 2 mcd/m2 after 60 minutes. Both EG 75 and EG 55 comply with these requirements with ambient charging illumination of only 21,6 lux. The photo luminescent effect will vary according to the coating thickness of the photo luminescent paint.

Facts

Zinc sulfide versus strontium aluminate
Many of the photo luminescent Low Location Lighting (LLL) systems in use today, are based on zinc sulfide (ZnS) as the main pigment. The advantage is relatively quick charging, but these products have a limited 'storage' life and the ZnS corrodes over time (2-4 years lifespan). However, the introduction of strontium aluminate as a pigment, has provided a much higher level of performance. Although it takes slightly longer to charge, it can 'store' more light, making it much more suitable for use in locations where ambient light levels are low.

The phosphorescent effect and properties of these paints are perfect for industrial use, hotels, offshore, ships and more and make a very good alternative and supplement for traditional LLL-systems. One use for this paint is e.g. for painting protruding objects or edges that pose a danger in darkness or when the sight is reduced due to e.g. smoke.

The photo luminescent effect will vary according to the different coating thickness for the photo luminescent paints.

The advantage of these coatings as compared to signs and stickers, is that they adhere much better to the surface and therefore can withstand much rougher treatment.

Typical markets for these coatings are in principle wherever LLL systems are required. In practical terms, however, they will be the preferred choice for merchant vessels, passenger- and cruise vessels, offshore rigs, industrial sites, hospitals, schools etc.
