General
information regarding our certificates There is happening a lot in the regulations-area both for the use of photo luminescent materials, but also for electrical components. See e.g. ISO 16069. As a result of new regulations, products used for safety, evacuating etc are required to fulfill certain tests. On these pages you will find examples of the certificates MSS' products fulfills. IMO 752 (18) is enforced as of October 1st 1997 stating that all escape route signs and fire equipment location markings shall be of photo luminescent material approved according to IMO Resolution MSC.61(67) ref Fire Test Procedure (F.T.P) Code part 2 and 5. IMO regulations require all passenger ships built before October 1994 , and carrying more than 36 passengers, to be fitted with LLL systems for emergency use. The regulations require a minimum luminance of 2 mcd/m2 after 60 minutes after the removal of the light source. After 10 minutes the requirements are 15 mcd/m2. Example of testing and gaining certificatesMetal Safe Sign has tested different types of escape and guidance products. Below you'll find abstracts of the tests carried out. The two different products tested were: One type made of solid plastics and the other type made of thin plastic surface attached to steel sheets. The fire technical behavior of the two types of material were quite different. This was mainly due to the difference of the content of combustible substance of the two materials. The contribution of heat and smoke to a room fire situation is of course dependent of the amount of exposed sign material. For the steel sheet materials the measured heat and smoke production were very limited. For the solid plastic materials the heat and smoke production were considerably higher. The calculated chloride production was considerably higher for the solid plastic material compared to the steel sheet materials. The production of carbonmonoxcide was about 10 times higher for the solid plastic materials compared to the steel sheet materials. Steel sheet materials are not deformed in temperatures below 190oC. The PVC sign material ... deformed at 59oC. Smoke Generation
according to ISO 5659-2 (1994) Spread of flame and rate
of heat release according to IMO A.653(16) The tested samples of the product called
"Triple L (Low Location Lighting)" can also be deemed to meet the technical fire
requirements for surfaces having low flame-spread characteristics on bulkhead, wall and
ceilings according to IMO Res. MSC.61 (67), Annex 1, Part 5, section 2. (Full text here).
